TV for cosy room settled!
Its the same shop where we placed our Samsung 40" LCD TV and sound system as they sell LCD TVs at dealers' prices which are much slower than anywhere else.
Went down with my colleague (who recommended me the shop) after work as he needed to check something there as I placed the order for the TV and check out TV racks for this TV. Told the boss din want to spend too much so he offered to sell me some of his older stocks at $50 but will bring down and show me 1st b4 I decide to get or not.
More stuff installed
Was at our new house on Sat to receive the goods and saw the workers painting. Meanwhile, we had our screws for the bolts of our gate changed as advised by an uncle who was doing it for the households there. He mentioned that 2 houses at Blk 307 were broken into whereby the burglar removed the whole piece of iron gate just by simply removing the bolts at the nine connectors of the gates and easily knock off the main door.
One screw inside a bolt took less than 3 secs (using a hammer and screw) to remove and in such a new and sparsely occupied neighbourhood, no one would suspect anything (the hammer noise). Its really scary as we listened and saw him demonstrated. Quite surprised that the government actually overlooked such details when making gates. After we spent about $155 for 9 screws in the bolts, we were advised to use good locks. Naturally after securing the gates, we need a good lock so it would not be cut off so easily.
Monday
The lightings have finally started installation yesterday while we took leave to supervise. Pris told us to be there at 9am and those people only slowly came by 10am. Wasted my beauty sleep... We also had the water heaters, toilet bowl (for master bedroom toilet) and doorbell installed and left after meeting up with the window grills guy.
We were then off to Compass Point to check out on the water fountain but found none to our liking. Will probably try to find one by end of June to save on 2% GST if possible.
Took a train down to Hougang and went to two shops doing curtains. Looks like we will not be able to start until the house reno is completed thus will have to check back again which shop we will buy from, to get them to do measurements. These two shops however got different ways of doing. One is to choose the cloth and design 1st b4 they will go and do measurements whereby the other one is opposite way. The 2nd one also has the flexibility to just sell and install the poles, without buying the cloth from them (which is the bulk cost).

More stuff confirmed
We were told the house would only be completed sometime mid or 3rd week of July, which is very far from expected. No choice lor since we found such a big firm with so big clientele and our ID always so bz...

Updates
Sunday
Went to Rochor area with Web and my in-laws to shop for Guan Yin Statue and an altar table. Had glanced thru sometime back thus we more or less know what we are looking for. I only eyed one 2ft modern altar table coz the rest are too traditional (not so nice looking in a modern home). Luckily my wish was fulfilled else I would be damn upset for an altar table to spoil the look of my future home.
We then checked out few shops for a Guan Yin statue and eventually got a 18" one at $130 and other stuff like the incense bowl, lights, trays and cups for offering use. We had eyed one Guan Yin statue sometimes back but seeing it again, we changed our minds. It also cost more thus we got one which is pinkish and quite colourful. Initially was afraid the colour might run and wanted to get a pure white one but it might turn yellowish with incense burning daily thus gave it a miss. I still like the pink one so another wish fulfilled. It was said that we must buy something we like and pleasing to our eyes so at least we both like it.
The same statue was sold at a much higher price in one of the shops at Fu Lu Shou complex for at least double the price. Lucky thing we checked around 1st and eventually got it at one of the shops at Rochor Complex (dunno what name but its the one opp Fu Lu Shou Complex). Its also just next to the shop we got our altar table.
After ding dong here and there for almost 3.5 hrs, we left for Web's home in a cab and after a short rest, we took a bus to the Buddhist temple near our new home. They had wanted to put the Guan Yin statue there and listen to prayers until we move it back to our completed home but the temple said they dun have such a practice but we can bring it on either 1st or 15th of each month for a couple of days. We then rested abit b4 walking to our new house and took a look b4 heading back to Hougang.
Saturday
Met Web at Toa Payoh to shop for electrical appliances (finally) at one of the shop my dad always go as their stuff (big items) are quite cheap. We got a Toshiba fridge at $718 and LG washing machine at $352 inclusive of delivery and GST, which was at least $200 cheaper than outside for each item. Also bought a vacuum cleaner, microwave oven and a toaster oven but realised later that some items were more ex than Courts but no choice, at least we dun have to cash and carry them.
Friday
Went to our new house to check the progress and heard from the workers that our main door is abit crooked and we should feedback to HDB to have it changed. Seriously not much hope on this but will probably try. They take ages just to rectify the faults we reported earlier in Apr after we got our keys and till now, not completed yet.

Lightings and toilet accessories shopping done
Released Pris after the last stop while we negotiate for more discounts (on top of the already quite cheap prices + discount) as we felt bad taking up so much of her time. It was almost 4pm when she left and we were done right after. She was quite nice as initially she only said to bring us to buy lightings but ended up brought us throughout.
We then took a bus back to Eunos for an early dinner b4 heading back to AMK. Went to the furniture shop again but found nothing suitable as we were looking for a low coffee table. Hanged ard at AMK hub again b4 heading home.

Ordered more furnitures
Started off in our new house again in the morning to take exact measurements of some areas we missed everytime. We then went to Novena Furnishing at Hougang Plaza to take measurements of the stuff we bought (to make sure they fits) and to exchange our shoe cabinet for a tall shelf as we decided to use the divider at the main entrance and the cabinets can be used as a shoe cabinet. Wanted to get a set of chest drawers which we missed the last time but unfortunately, its a last piece again so we have to give it a miss.
Took a bus to Tanjong Katong Complex and checked out the Green again for any new furnitures (esp sofa set and dining table set) but went out empty handed. The half-leather sofa set was too ex and out of our budget so decided to go to the Furniture Warehouse to take a look 1st b4 working out our budget again, who knows we eventually got it at AMK. They recommended us a marble table dining set but as usual, too out of budget and we did not intend to go for marble (preferred clear glass) thus did not get it. We then headed for dinner at the nearby hawker centre then took a bus back to AMK. Had decided to take a break but dropped by the Defu Furniture anyway and who knows, we managed to get our stuff there!
Good thing that now we got most of our furniture stuff and probably will not need a trip down to Jurong East again. The last stuff we need now is a small TV console for our resource room (last known as cosy room but realised that its more of a resource area with TV and laptops etc. so renamed) and a bigger coffee table for our newly proposed tea corner.
Now we will need to start looking out for electrical appliances by end of June. Angeline has offered to help us buy some Philips home appliances at at least 40% off as her bf works there so will pass her a list soon. Our ID Pris will probably bring us down to buy all those toilet and kitchen accessories as well as lightings soon.
Aircon installed!
Was at our new house earlier on after the morning session at ROM for the statutory declaration and a break after that. The session took quite fast and we were done by 9.40am and proceeded to Burger King for breakfast and stayed there till ard 12pm b4 we shopped abit. Web then went back to work coz he needed to cover his colleagues who were on course and I took the north east train to Sengkang.
The aircon guys were almost done when I was there and told me to go back in about 45 mins' time. Went downstairs wanted to sit at the void deck but was occupied so sat near the basketball court. The sun soon came in and feeling warm, I walked to the other side where there's a pavillion. Who knows some kids then came back to play soccer so to avoid being hit (and too noisy anyway), I walked back to the void deck and luckily the people left. Sat until almost time then went up to collect warranty cards and remote controls etc. b4 leaving them to wrap up the aircon units and took a cab home. Got no energy to rock home by bus.
Had planned to do my hair with sis in the early afternoon but got delayed by the aircon thing so she would have to go another day and I managed to go just now ard 4pm+. Initially need not go down our new house since instructions already given to Web's mum who went on our behalf this morning but the guys said will finish late afternoon so wanted us to be there so I had to go down since Web had to work.
Finally ordered flowers for my ROM from a florist near my house. Decided to DIY the bouquet thus only ordered 20 stalks of roses (might just need some ribbons) and all cost will be charged to the groom. Saw alot of nice bouquets but cost too much to use only for couple of hours. The designs are also quite simple thus quite easy to DIY.

Toilet accessories survey and more...
Had dinner at one of the coffeeshops near Jalan Besar Stadium then started our journey of checking out lights and those toilet accessories. End up managed to shortlist a shop whereby the lights are really going at a good discount (40% + 20%) so we will KIV 1st. My fren did introduce a shop to me (which her hubby can get at least 30% discount) but I find their lights nothing special and price probably at par with the shop we found so might not get them there. Furthermore, we only require simple lights so more or less wun be too ex.
Need to buy a toilet bowl as we removed out ugly dark blue one and managed to get some tips from the shop we shortlisted. We will probably go with our ID to check out the one she will bring us to as she mentioned they charged very reasonable and flexible (in case we changed our minds). Guess its still early thus hopefully will have time soon to go down in time for the reno works.
Busy day tomorrow as we planned to go down to our new house again to take more measurements and then back to Novena Furnishing to measure some stuff and might change some stuff we bought. Decided to shift some things around and the shoe cabinet might be redundant. After that will need to go Tanjong Katong Complex to check out any new stock and probably get some kitchen/ toilet accessories from Hoe Kee.
Sunday will be a shopping day whereby we will bring Web's mum for shopping. She has yet to buy clothes for our ROM and wedding. Sis managed to buy some tops yesterday and some today as well as a dress while Mum bought a green top only. I have since given up on finding suitable clothes thus will make do with whatever I have for bro's wedding.
Met Pris (my ID) at my office this morning to discuss about the lightings (L-Box and false ceiling) for our living room and dining area. Finally settled the layout and work will resume next Tue together with the aircon installation. No work today till then coz we have not finalised the design and Pris assured me that we are on time. Dun really affect me but Web is quite worried. He is also not able to take leave next Tue coz both his colleagues are on course and he needs to cover them. I would have to go alone to our new house for the aircon installation then probably visit the salon to colour my hair (colour treatment) else I dun think got much time. Will be on leave next Fri to have some last min preparations and touch up for my ROM on Sat. Xris had been so nice to take leave and we can go manicure/ pedicure that day.
Managed to go down my BS yesterday to try on my ROM gown. Looked really nice and not as bad as I thought. From the design, thought it would look more like an evening gown and too over. Good thing it looked ok and fits me just nice! Next fitting would be next Monday after work (gonna be damn busy again) and hopefully can collect my shoes on the same day nearby at International Plaza.

Settled electrical and re-wiring stuff
Left for the nearby coffeeshop for a drink b4 heading back to Compass Point to make balance payment for our aircon unit. As we might not have time to go down and need to arrange for the installation soon, got my sis to check my invoice no. and manage to pay w/o the invoice. We then took a bus back to Web's place for dinner and I stayed till 10pm++ then took a cab home.
We will need to take leave again next week, tentative on Tue but going to reschedule to Wed instead as the next day is a holiday, for the aircon installation. Decided to take the full day so we could do some shopping for bathroom and other accessories on that day at Jalan Beser. Shops there usually dun open on weekends thus no chance to go take a look yet. Also need to check out a lighting shop where my fren is able to get at least 30% discount for us, hope can save abit. We have also decided to change our toilet bowl from the ugly blue so need to get a white, nice looking one to match our vanity top. I am sure looking forward to our nice bathroom!!

What a Monday!
The Novena Furnishing showroom was quite big, quite unexpected from the look outside. Spent almost 3 hrs there walking here and there, up and down until I was feeling so tired, hungry, leg pain and headache. We managed to get about 9 items which cost us ard $2.5k. These includes wardrobe for guest room, study table with shelves set for cozy room, a football chair set for cozy room, side tables (nite tables) and chest drawers for master bedroom, coffee table, shoe cabinet and divider. Quite a good bargain as they are on promotions and more or less within our budget.
We had wanted to get a set of sofa (as the one we ordered from Courts still out of stock) but nothing caught our eyes. The ones they have are either too ex (full leather), too obiang looking (although cheap) or not comfortable. Even the 2 dining tables we saw were the last pieces going at $599 with 4 chairs but din take coz the chairs were quite scratched and we dun really fancy display pieces. Will probably source around sometime soon.
Pris (our ID) sms me this morning asking us to meet tonite but later called and asked if we could take pm leave tomorrow as we need to be on-site to discuss on existing wiring (phone, scv, electrical) b4 they could hack the whole piece of wall for the study area. Web was actually quite fed up with Pris coz she should have discussed with us beforehand but I explained that maybe she's good in design but not so familiar with on-site works. Anyway, hope we can settle everything tomorrow and get the reno work on track.

Initial selection completed
Chose different tiles for overall (living room/ dining, all bedrooms) and kitchen + balcony. We chose materials and colours for the kitchen cabinets then took quite a while to decide on our master bedroom design (colour theme) etc and finally to the vanity cabinet. Now we will wait for Pris to come up with the design concept and we shall see if further adjustments need to be made. We also decided to fabricate pillars at the entrance to avoid facing the main windows as we will remove the balcony door. For fengshui reason, we not supposed to open the door leading to any doors/ windows to avoid flowing out of "chi" for the house. The pillars suit that purpose and also able to allow wind to seap through from the main door as there's where it mainly come from.
We have also decided to add in more false ceilings and lights to enhance the overall atnnosphere of the dining room and master bedroom which Pris will give us a proposal. We have also finally got confirmation from HDB (they called Web today and informed our ID too) that our permit is approved and we should have the official letter soon. The reno work will start on Monday, 21 May 07 as planned thus it should be completed by end of June if everything is smooth!

Settled aircon
Sunday
Went to Gain City at AMK and finally got our aircon unit. Got a system-3 plus additional top-up for extended warranty and FOC upgrade for the insulation and copper pipes. It naturally exceeded out budget again but not too bad coz we din count the extended warranty in earlier.
After recommendations by the salesman, which was quite friendly compared to the others who either looked quite stone or TOO helpful (u know, like he can follow u thru' out that kind), we took a Fujitsu model as its compressor is known as one of the quietest. As our aircon ledge is just outside our bedroom, we need to make sure its not too noisy else how to sleep... This model also has two fans thus if we only use one room most of the time, it will save energy and cost. We had initially tempted to get LG but that model is suitable for many rooms usage to save energy and cost. If only one room is more utilised, it will be quite high on consumption, as it has only one fan in the compressor.
We then browsed thru the LCD TVs and might changed our plan to get a Samsung to a LG. Samsung is quite expensive based on their technology and design and its very out of budget. Will probably need to check out again in June and order b4 the GST hike.

Reno permit finally approved
Pris also mentioned that a safer way is to engage a PE (Project Engineer) to certify and endorse but would need to pay $500 for his service and it might drag to a month's plus. One of her client actually got rejected recently, with the same requirements as us and she's scared ours will be delayed. We then decided not to remove the balcony door but on the other hand, she did submit a drawing to HDB and who knows, it really went through! I even wrote an email to the officer to ask him to help in expediting but no reply from him yet, guess doesn't really matter now.
We will be meeting Pris tomorrow to select the 1st round of stuff like tiles etc. Hopefully everything should be finalised while we wait for the offical permit letter. Web has been worried about the reno coz he wanted it to end by mid July if possible so now more or less he should be able to have a good night's sleep.

Review of furniture shops
Been very busy and no time to review on the furniture shops we went so far. Was home quite early last nite (ard 10pm+) but after that bro and sil came over and we chit chatted till 11pm+. Was too tired to gather my thoughts by then coz suddenly remembered need to go for an early offsite meeting in the next morning so need to sleep early.
It was a damn warm day yesterday, while we 1st went to Nan Chiau Pri School near our new home for the Sengkang West Family day. Eh dun ask me go for what, I guess we need to relax abit after being so bz for the past weeks so we decided to drop by.
Exchanged our coupons for a free small pack of not nice popcorns and quite hard candy floss (my breakfast actually) and spent $1 for a cup of soya bean milk. Nothing much there seriously but we managed to entertained ourselves by spinning a wheel after answering some questions relating to water saving and won a mini time keeper and a post-it pad, after queuing for almost 15 mins+. We then went to the main "hall" under a sauna-like tentage waiting for lucky draw results. There were quite a no. of prizes but we din win anything. Its not quite fair coz alot of people got lots of coupons (we only had one) and some received more than one prize. Even the organisers' also participated and won... kelong...
We then walked to Compass Point under the scorching sun and took a bus to Paya Lebar to check out one furniture shop - Silver River. Left shortly and took a bus to Tanjong Katong Complex at Paya Lebar to check out other shops which we din manage to the last time as its closing time then. Had dinner at KFC and met a friend there. After walking one round at City Plaza, we took a bus back to AMK to hang ard b4 calling it a day.
Here's the review for the furniture shops we visited so far:
Courts (Tampines, Toa Payoh, Compass Point, AMK)
Prices are quite good now as they are having their 33rd anniversary sale ending 10 May. Other than sofa sets and bedroom sets, the rest more or less nothing attractive coz the designs are too common (like dinning tables, TV consoles). Some items are still quite ex even though they are on sale (like chest drawers), probably made of better wood materials.
Try go for the Tampines branch coz they have practically everything! They even have a cafe like Ikea but not much people...
Able to keep stock for only max. 3 months thus quite infelxible. But cheap la, cannot complain...
Ikea (Tampines)
As everyone knows, things are quite cheap, especially those DIY stuff. Unless you are really on a tight budget, dun bother coz its cheap but need to DIY and wun last. Some feedbacked that those DIY wood stuff will "open" at the end on the touch of water.
Other stuff like toilet rolls holder, towel racks, crockeries etc are quite worth though. Will go there again after our renovation is completed to get those necessities like bowls, cups, storage boxes/ pockets etc.
Check out the hotdog buns at the payment floor and the chicken wings on the entrance floor cafe!
The Furniture Warehouse (Toh Guan - behind IMM)
Nice selection of furnitures, especially their Mondi (Italian) and Zen collections. Prices are quite reasonable and worksmanship good. Due to our very tight budget, might or might not get anything from here afterall.
Nova Furnishing (Paya Lebar)
Hate the sales people! Follows you throughout and offered suggestions when you did not even ask for them! Personally I hate it la, I will ask if I need help but pls dun follow me around, no freedom to browse.
The furnitures are cheap but of poor qualities. The better ones are damn ex and not worth it. We left after walked one around and constantly harrassed by a sales guy.
Style Furniture (Paya Lebar)
Very cramped place but the sales gal was quite friendly. Prices reasonable and they have own made furnitures. Nothing caught our eyes as the place was quite cramped. Might check back again.
Sincere Furniture (Paya Lebar)
Nothing much and things quite ex. Bed frames were damn cheap though but I think will collapse in a year or two. Sales person was helpful but very ah beng.
The Green (Tanjong Katong Complex)
Furnitures were generally of good quality and sales people quite friendly, although they also followed us around. Able to bargain abit and they waived off delivery charge in addition to some discounts. Bought our bed set there and placed deposit for a TV console (cheapest we seen so far and design quite unique). Can change to other stuff if new stock arrives. Able to keep stock up to one year, which is ideal for us as our house renovation not even started.
Aero Furnishing (Parkway Parade & Paya Lebar)
Very expensive stuff and nothing worth the $. The sales people also same kind, followed throughout.
Brighton (Toa Payoh)
Prices are cheap but qualities not good. Everything looked cheapo and place quite cramped too. We were unattended throughout and got freedom to see around.
Defu Furniture (AMK)
Quite a no. of sale items and only shop where the sales people will not really follow you around. Their stuff are generally quite ex compared to outside even though they claimed they are having a sale (opening sale of 50 to 70%).
The kitchen and bathroom stuff are damn ex there, better dun buy there.
TPY 177 Furniture (Toa Payoh)
Alot of catalogs to browse through but the sales people (the bosses in fact) were not very friendly (no smiles). Quality does not match prices so we will skip this as well.
Comfort Furniture (Rochor)
Was looking for altar tables and came across this shop. They have a wide selection and prices cheapest among all. Might get from there coz they have a piece which we find it quite nice and not so traditional.
They also sell tables and chairs which we did not really explore, will check again soon.
Rochor Furniture (cun rem what name) (Rochor)
Quite reasonable priced but nothing caught our eyes. Realised that different sales people quoted different prices for same item (even though the price tag was there) so we left. Maybe depends how you bargain for the stuff.
Lee Furniture (Tanjong Katong Complex)
Place is damn cramped, worst of all! The sales gal also followed us throughout without making a single noise. The stuff are quite ex (comparing the stuff selling elsewhere).
Silver River (Paya Lebar)
It was quite big as it occupies about 5 floors there but the furnitures were quite ex as the prices were exclusive of GST and delivery charges. Even if you purchase more items, you still need to pay for the highest delivery charge. Heard that there will be price increase in June (for materials accounted inclusive of GST) and July (for delivery charge to cater for GST increase). We find that its not cheap at all if they charge like that, somemore the stuff were not cheap in the 1st place.

Search for furnitures
Went IMM and the nearby furniture shop again. Wanted to check out this furniture shop above NTUC at Jurong East Central but realised its no more there. I remembered it was still there couple of months back, many years since we last went there (sometime during my secondary school days) to buy my study table and cupboard which are still very sturdy today. When I finally decide to go again, it either moved or closed down.
Nothing much to see in IMM except they finally shifted some furniture shops on the 3rd floor. We left shortly to the "Furniture Warehouse" just behind Giant and decided nothing much to get from there. Might just go back to "The Green" and check out other shops at Tanjong Katong Shopping Centre at Paya Lebar. We only had time to browse thru "The Green" the last time, spending 1.5hrs+ there.
Took a bus to Toa Payoh wanting to change to a bus to Upper Paya Lebar to check out another furniture shop (Silver River) but decided to alight at Toa Payoh to take a look at one of the furnitures shop there but realised most of the stuff were quite cheapo. We wanted cheap and good but have to accept that the quality is just worth the amount you pay (一分钱一分货). Went to courts again and realised the chest drawers were quite ex although the material is indeed better.
Wood
Learnt that those cheapo furnitures usually use plank wood, which is hollow inside. Such wood will not last long and cannot hold too heavy stuff. Those more ex ones, use solid wood, which is sturdy and definitely stronger and made to last. For eg., a similar TV console can cost as cheap as $168 (plank wood) and $399 for solid wood. We then have to decided depending on budget and needs. I am someone who will go for quality than price, to save the hassle of changing furnitures every one or two years.
The reason why fabricated furnitures done by renovation company usually cost quite alot coz they use solid wood and you also pay for worksmanship. I have seen furnitures at some places where the worksmanship really cannot make it so no point wasting money even though they are real cheap.
That's why things like wardrobe in our master bedroom and cabinets below vanity in the master bedroom bathroom, I would prefer to have it fabricated as I will want them to last long. Of coz another reason is coz its quite difficult to find exact size to fit in those areas.
TV console
The usual price for a TV console (based on about a normal size for living room) can range from $300+ up to $800+ depending on the quality and material. For eg. a $300+ one, expect plank wood material and probably no glass anywhere (covers or top). For an average one, expect to pay ard $500+ to $600+. We chose one which is ard $599 and managed to get a $100 discount, which is quite a good bargain coz its made of solid wood, with glass doors and internal lights (which is not crucial - just for decor only). "The Furniture Warehouse" has quite alot of good and cheap TV consoles, except most of which dun come with covers (a minus point for us coz players will be dusty if not cleaned regularly).
Sofas
Sat and tried on many sets of sofa even b4 we got our flat. The 2 sets at Courts were the most comfortable we saw so far and managed to place orders for both. Same logic about price and materials applies for sofas. The ones we saw were originally at ard $1999 each set but now going for only $833. Of coz I have heard feedbacks that Courts furniture not really that good but I dun mind coz I dun see any set of sofas can last for long time. Instead of spending so much (a good set costs at least $1.5k to $2k+) on a set of sofa whereby it will wear and tear in a couple of years anyway. Of coz another criteria for us in choosing a set of sofa is the comfort level. We should be able to enjoy sitting on it while watching tv or just relaxing. No point buying a really cheap set and you can feel the wood when you sit on it, which we have experienced alot while trying. As for the material, leather of coz is the best but also the most ex. Half leather works well too if you are willing to pay abit more than synthetic (manmade) leather. The latter feels abit harder and not so smooth but its a cheaper alternative.
Bed frame and mattress
Choosing of mattress is quite easy but not for bed frame. Of coz the only problem we have is the size of the overall set coz our master bedroom is not very big and spacious. Even the other bedrooms actually looked bigger but no choice coz we have an attached bathroom.
Due to our body weight, we cannot get too hard or too soft a mattress. Main thing is to try (with pillows of coz) to see the comfort level and main criteria is that they have the individual spring technology, so either of us wun get disturbed when the other is turning and tossing. I always have this problem of being awaken by the other party tossing and turning in hotel rooms, like elephants thumping. No joke ok... they wun feel it but I am the one suffering. Snoring is already bad enough to endure (even though I do snore too).
As for the bed frame, we wanted puffy and sturdy kind, so we could sit back and read books or whatever b4 bedtime. It must of coz be within the room allowance and be able to within our weight. Nowadays bed frames usually come in 4, 5, 6 or 8 legs. 4 legs is usual but not suitable for too heavy couples, you wun want your bed to collapse so easily rite? 5 legs is what Four Stars has as they have an extra leg in the middle for support (in case the middle part sinks). 6 legs is also becoming more popular as it can have better support. As for 8 legs, its usually when the divan set consist of 2 single portions (each has 4 legs) and each of which can be used separately later if the king size mattress is not in use anymore. It also has better support, especially for heavy couples like us.
One important factor to choose is bedframe is also to get a 2-piece headboard instead of just one which goes straight down to the bottom at the divan side. Simple reason being support when you lean on it, it wun break down so fast as it has double the support. Of coz when choosing, dun get those shaky ones even though they are cheap coz your bed frame would likely collapse within a couple of years. A reasonably price would range from $600+ to $800+ for a good to excellent head frame. Anything below that buy at your own risk and above that you have to careful not to get conned (unless its real branded).
Others
Will post my research and findings after the rest of the furnitures is settled. We need to check out more furniture shops to take a look and decide where to get them. Pending stuff are dining table + chairs, cupboards for bedroom (guest room), study table for cosy room, smaller TV console for cosy room, chest drawers, altar table and shoe rack.

Its so hard to reject!
Managed to place an order at Courts for the sofa set which was supposed to be out of stock. The lady told us will probably need to wait at least 3 weeks for delivery and she will contact me when the stock arrives. Until then, we can then make full payment so they could reserve a set for us or use the deposit for something else should the new stock be insufficient. Guess its not as bad coz at least we tried and hopefully can get it.
Just managed to send mails out to all the 4 IDs we had to forgo. Should be meeting up on our ID next week to discuss on plans and design. Hopefully the permit would be approved soon.

Announcing the winner...
Meantime, we have finally confirmed the ID to renovate our house last nite. We were trying very hard to get a conclusion as both quotes are similar in pricing and eventually chose the big firm (ID 2 as mentioned in previous blog), mainly for the guarantee in capentry works and reliability (alot of good feedbacks in the forum).
We called the ID and was lucky to be able to secure an appointment with her. I guess when she knew we were going to engage her, she would try her best to make time out for us. After some discussion and negotiation, settled the reno package at ard 23k with summarised of works as follows:
1. homogeneous tiles for all rooms
2. hacking of balcony and study area
3. construction of kitchen cabinets with work top, complete with dish drainer, door handles and set of cooker hob and hood
4. built-in L-shaped wardrobe for master bedroom
5. removal of current door for master bedroom bathroom and replace with glass door
6. removal of current vanity top in master bedroom bathroom and reconstruct wall hung suspended vanity cabinet, side shelf, built-in sink and whole piece mirror
7. casement windows for balcony and service balcony
8. window grills for whole house
9. false ceiling for L-box lights
10. other basic installations and works
Its finally a load off our minds and shall wait for the permit etc to be approved b4 work can be commenced sometime mid May and further design details to be finalised. We will be busy shopping for house stuff from now on...

The amazing race
Let's not put names here, so we call it ID 1 (a small ID firm) and ID 2 (an established big firm). We have seen both IDs twice so far but got the 1st quote only from ID 2 just last nite and its matching to the 2nd quote (revised) given to us by ID 1. ID 1's sales person was quite knowledgeable as he has been an onsite engineer b4 and now doing some sales and design. He's quite ah beng but very straighforward and frank. Some of the stuff he quoted was really quite reasonable priced. As for ID 2, she's someone who prefers us to save here and there (told us can buy, buy from outside - cheaper) and quite a motherly figure. However, she can be quite disorganised and forgetful. Her prices are also quite competitive where some items may be cheaper, some more ex than ID 1. Both have rooms for negotiation and this will come in when we decide who to engage.
Now waiting for the revised quotes from both IDs b4 we make a decision by this weekend, and need to make decisions on the details (design, tiles, layout etc) by 3rd week of May and to start work once ok. Heard that permit might take up to a week plus so we hope for the best coz so many people are renovating their houses now.
Due to general fengshui and feasilibity concerns, our floor plans have changed quite alot throughout this period. The overall design was also minimised to save on splurging. There are still stuffs which are quite must-do kind like the kitchen cabinets and built-in wardrobe for the master bedroom. As we wanted to make the living room space bigger, we also planned to hack away the study area and balcony (which I was against but bo bian) and tried not to put too much false ceiling for the existance of an altar table (which will tar the ceiling very easily). Although the cost of reno has gone from an initial quote of 28k-32k (with alot of design stuff the IDs proposed) until about less than 23k now, we anticipated more spending on the furnitures and electrical parts. Overall, its a big hole in our pocket!!
Web was quite stressed over the reno thing coz he wanted to beat the 7th lunar month which I think there is still time. Such things also cun be rushed coz we are really abit slow in getting an ID so I am taking it easy. He kept stressing me over the dates to start, which may not be under our control, and when it should finish so we have ample time to bring all the furnitures etc in b4 the lunar 7th month. We also need to order all the furnitures and electrical stuff by end of June, to beat the GST hike, which I think should be ok too. Guys and gals really stress over different things...

Just another busy weekend
Friday
Met up with one ID after he revised the quote at AMK. We had dinner at S-11 b4 going to Mac and waited for him. The quote looked ok and within our budget and will meet him again as he could not rushed out the drawings in time. We have also yet to meet another shortlisted ID as both our timings were quite tight. Had arranged to meet on Monday after work.
Saturday
Went to our new house again to collect the fruit offerings and made some last minute check and measurements. We then took a bus to Compass Point b4 taking another bus to Paya Lebar to check out some furniture shops. We alighted where there are 2 shops but nothing much, although the salesgal at the 2nd one was quite friendly and picked up a chat with me. Din see anything attractive or cheap and good thus left to walk to Nova Furnishing just down the road.
We were quite disappointed with Nova furnishing coz the furnitures were not cheap at all, and cheaper ones were of very poor qualities. The saleman was also quite gluesome and we left after briefly walking one round.
We then took a bus to Parkway Parade and had our early dinner as we were both abit hungry. Spent some time reading up on Fengshui books at MPH after we shared a scoop of ice cream. Realised that alot of placements for our furnitures might need to change as its no good for Fengshui. We had intended to have our study table against the window but read that its no good sitting in front of a window and back facing the door. The bed can only be placed at our proposed position but will probably be disturbed by the aircon compressor outside our room. Its really damn poor design of the house, especially the master bedroom. Guessed we just have to make the best out of it now...
Sunday
Went down to the BS and tried on my wedding gown. Looked ok but needed some alterations at the shoulder straps and trim the waistline abit. Embriodery not sewn yet thus it looked quite plain now. It was unexpectedly quite heavy coz they used satin as the base. Dun quite like that but bo bian now...
Were then discussing on the evening gown and at 1st thought of not having one coz will use my ROM dress (which looked like a gown anyway) but they could not give me anything in exchange so decided to go ahead with it anyway. Vivian (my designer) proposed blue colour so I leave it to her, since I will not be keeping it. We have also arranged our photoshoot to be on 14 June (Thurs) and had to be there by 10am.
Walked to Chinatown after that and took a bus to Rochor area to check out a furniture shop and in search for an altar table and Guan Yin statue. We saw one at a shop near the temple and quite like it and cun seem to find it anywhere else. Hopefully it's still available when we go there again soon.
Was then searching for altar tables at Fu Lu Shou Complex and realised alot were quite huge and costly (from $400+). Finally saw a more reasonable one at Rochor Centre and cost ard $300. We would most probably order it from there (plus maybe some chairs if price is cheap) the next round we buy our Guan Yin statue.
We still had some time so took a bus to Geylang to check out 2 more shops selling praying stuff but nothing much we liked so walked to the nearby Tanjong Katong Shopping Centre (Paya Lebar). Saw few furniture shops there and a shop selling those taps etc. Went to the 1st furniture shop and spent almotst 1.5hrs there until we have no time left for the rest as they had closed for the day.
We finally settled our bed post (Four Stars) and mattress (Four Stars Innus Detense) there which came with some freebies like 2 Detense pillows, 2 bolsters (asked for extra one so we dun have to fight for it) and one mattress protector, which was quite a good bargain. We managed to get them to waive off the GST and delivery charges as well. We also booked a TV console which cost less than our budget (after discount of $100) and had the delivery charge waived.
The furnitures were quite reasonably priced and considered of better quality than other places (of coz the one I liked best is still at The Furniture Warehouse). Too bad the sofa sets were quite ex (of better quality) and out of our budget. The dining sets were also too small for our needs thus will probably go back again in June to check out new stocks or will get from somewhere else.
Was pretty hungry by then but took a bus back to AMK and had Mac for late dinner/ supper. Reached home almost 11.30pm and managed to update our floor plan with changes (again!).

Praying for house
Went out ard 11am and was quite pissed off coz waited for the stupid bus 59 for almost 20 mins and still din come. By then one 231 passed by which I din take coz tot 59 is easier to change to 88 to take to Web's place. Ended up still took 231 (the 2nd one!) and changed to a slow moving bus and reached Web's place at 12pm+! I even dozed off during the journey... I am starting to have phobia taking buses now...
Rested a while at Web's place and waited for the heavy rain to stop b4 we took a cab (with his parents) to our new house and waited for the monk to come and do prayers. It was supposed to be at 3pm but we reached b4 2pm ( talk about kiasu...). It was quite warm and no place to sit at the flat so we went down to the nearby coffeeshop for a drink and snacks. Went back again and waited for almost another 1/2 hr b4 the monk finally came at 3.15pm. It was prayers etc and finally ended ard 4pm+ as we parted our ways, me and Web to Compass Point (again!) and his parents went home.

Disorganised...
When we were back at our unit, realised we really need a spanner to turn the knob, but we dun have any. Had to walk to the nearest Econ minimart to buy one and lucky thing they have, else we would have to go Compass Point. I din want to comment as long as everything 's settled eventually. After taking measurements of the master bedroom, kitchen and service balcony, we walked to the nearby temple then to Compass Point to take a break. I was so tired by the time we reached and quickly found a place in KFC. Shared some snacks and drinks b4 starting to do some checking on the reno requirements again.
I was then thinking whether to get aircon units (need 2) for the living room and trying to find an alternative to keep the living/ dining area cool if we dun use aircon when Web made a remark which was quite hurting. I sort of got too emotional and broke down. My usual style, I will not argue or make a scene in public but I need to let out my frustrations. He then made another remark which hurt me further but I tried to control myself. Took a while to break the ice while we proceeded to Courts to take some measurements. Along the way, he told me not to cry next time and said he knew he was wrong. I din comment further coz I know he will do it again.
Its really not easy to plan for a house and wedding at the same time. I know both of us are under alot of hidden pressure and might say things that might hurt each other and not realising it. Alot of time I rather endure whatever it comes than create an unnecessary arguement but there are times when I just cannot take some hurting remarks. At this point of time, it takes alot of effort from both parties to work things out and pull it through so we can enjoy a hassle free wedding and a nice home of our own.

Met another 3 IDs
It had been a busy day for us and tomorrow will be similar. Dun even have much time for leisure as expected, especially after we get our keys and need to finalise an ID soon. Couple of IDs we met, made the exclamation that we are looking for an ID so late, which was a surprise to us. We did not want to rush into any b4 evening viewing our flat coz we knew there will bound to be major changes. For example, we realised that the flat was not as big as we visualise from the floor plan and some parts of the flats need to be hacked (like the balcony door and study area walls). Its really no point if we find them to quote so early and will probably expect a re-quote later.
Anyway we met 3 IDs today, 1st one at Balestier where the ID was late for 1/2 hr coz she had rushed out to get some stuff. The ID was actually one of my IRC fren's wife but she dun look the friendly type. I also think that communication with her was not so smooth and she practically got no smile on her face. Should not be using her even though she's so far one of the cheaper ones. I dun trust her credibility coz heard she's one forgetful person and rather hostile kind. Took us 1 hr 45 mins for the session and both of us were quite high tide after that and had to use the washrooms from a nearby coffeeshop.
The 2nd one was at Thomson Rd, just a short walk away and the ID was late too! We had rested at the coffeeshop nearby and had some snacks and drinks and climbed up 4 storeys then realised he's not back yet. We went down since its rather warm there and sat downstairs waiting for him. I had a stomachache since morning and endured till had to release then at the coffeeshop toilet. Lucky thing the toilet was quite clean (coz not much crowd there on weekends) but too bad no toilet paper. Almost used up one pack of tissues, should have brought along a toilet roll!!
This ID was delayed at a site at Tampines and we had to wait almost 1/2 hr for him as well. It started raining quite heavily when we finally met him and lucky thing it stopped by the time we were done. Both IDs took us about 1 hr 45 mins. Have asked this 2nd one to re-quote and will meet him again when its ready coz he's somehow more trustable and knowledgeable. More or less he gave us the confidence that he will handle the project well and his pricing was quite good too.
The next stop was at Eunos and we have about an hr to get there. We took a bus to Lavender mrt stn (walking distance), went to relieve ourselves then took a bus down. The ID was also rushing back from somewhere but lucky she was not really late as we were about 20 mins early so waited at the nearby CC until she's back.
The discussion took us ard the same time as the earlier 2 and I was damn hungry by then. Web was falling asleep while the ID was trying to work out stuff to quote, measuring here and there.
She was quite detailed and told us try to save here and there but she's the only one so far who din prepare a prior quote for us so will have to meet her again.
After seeing these 5 IDs (2 earlier), which should be quite sufficient, we have shortlisted to the later 2 we met today (Thomson Rd and Eunos). Their pricing and professionalism attracted us more than anything. Of coz we would prefer a guy so the Thomson Rd one stands a better chance. So far out of the 5, 3 were females IDs. Actually this Thomson Rd one was supposed to be a female designer too but she was out of town thus this sale guy attended to us. Probably I should consider venturing into this line as well... hahaha... just kidding la, I would not want to burn all my weekends as IDs usually work 7 days week... tough!!
Anyway through all these visits, we sure learnt a lot and able to understand more of what we really require to renovate a house. We also realised that our budget of 20K was really quite impossible thus would try to keep it below 28K if possible. As we do not have that much cash left after renovation, all the other major stuff (like TV, bed frame and mattress, sofa sets, dining table etc) will likely be paid using 0% installment plans by credit cards.

Defects of our new flat
These are the pictures I took for all the defects. Lucky thing is there are no major problems like leaking, hollow tiles and cracks in the walls.

1st opening of our new house!
Started off to open all the windows and balconies doors to allow fresh air to seap in 1st then proceeded to place our offering of fruits in the middle of the living room b4 checking out the whole unit.
It was then checking for defects for the whole unit. We need to report all defects within 7 days from collection of keys so cun wait till next week, when we had intended to invite a monk to bless the flat. Lucky thing for 1st opening, we need only follow a general auspicious date and time.
After about 4 hrs of checking all items (including keys) and taking down notes, we finally left and lastly opened our letterbox and shocked to find that its damn packed with letters. brochures, magazines and even SCV cables inside. Put them all in the bag to check later. We then proceeded for lunch ard 12 noon at the nearby coffeeshop and took a bus back to Web's house to cool down and who knows, his parents wanted to go take a look so we set off again...
After about 1 hr inside the house, doing some last minute checking, we left as it started to rain heavily. Took a break downstairs b4 leaving to take bus (us to nearby Compass Point and his parents home) as the path out was more or less sheltered.
Check out our flat pictures here
We then had some drinks at Compass Point, shopped ard and wanted to take dinner but the food court was damn crowded. We thus continued shopping ard and check out shops like Seahorse (mattresses), Courts (furnitures) and Gain City (aircons). Headed back to the food court again, still as crowded but managed to get a table after making a few rounds.

Got our keys!!

Finally got our keys today... a total of 27 keys (3 for each door/ lock)!!
Met Web at ard 10.30am even though our appointment at HDB is 1.10pm. We went to the OCBC bank 1st to open a joint account then proceeded for brunch at Koufu. We then went to HDB to buy fire insurance 1st b4 going to take a queue no. for our appointment. We were already waiting there at 12.10pm, almost one hr early. Good thing we din have to wait that long coz we were called in ard 1pm and after all the procedures and signing of the flat documents (alot alot of pages, we were almost like idols giving out autographs!), we left abt 40 mins later and proceeded to the Singapore Power counter to sign up for the water and electricity (plus sewage, refuse etc) services.
We then went to the 3rd storey showroom for different categories of flats (2, 3, 4 and 5-rooms) and left for the nearby furniture showroom at Lor 5. Got sis to check the address and location for me as I forgot to bring it out. Disappointed that the furnitures there were not cheap at all, and the worksmanship seemed not too good too. We then left and walked to the library to take a break as we were both tired and felt quite warm under the hot sun.
Had snacks at KFC b4 going to Courts to check out their furnitures on offer. The sofa we were looking at went from $1400+ to now sales at $833!! We were still hesitating coz not sure of our house design yet (if colour can match) thus will probably make up our minds by end of the month as the promo is till 10 May 07.
We had initially checked that we could only open the doors to our new flat on 24 Apr 07 but we need to check for any defects within 7 days from today thus cannot wait till then. Luckily after checking, realised that we can actually go in anytime (just find a general auspicious date) and will get a shifu (temple monk) to perform opening ceremony rituals on 24 Apr 07. We are trying to see if this weekend works else will need to take leave again tomorrow (coz its a good date) again.

FINALLY settled my ROM dress
Was quite bz in the morning and only had breakfast ard 10am. After that stoned and worked till lunch time, and managed to catch a short nap (not sure how long, probably 20 mins+) and felt so much better after that! Had my lunch - bread with jam as I bought the loaf for the week this morning. Wasn't too bz in the afternoon and surfed abit and waited to time to pass...
Went down alone (Web was bz working and sis got lessons tonite) to my BS again after work to check out the materials (for suitable and nice colours) the designer got for my ROM dress. I was so blur (like in a daze) that I alighted at Raffles Place wanted to change train then realised no need so had to wait for the next one. Anyway I couldn't get my ideal colours (red and yellow) as she said wun be that nice so took quite a while to flip thru' all the cloth samples b4 we finally decided to try some evening gowns to brainstorm ideas.
Tried on about 3-4 gowns, not all can fit but just try the colours on me. Finally decided on a fuchsia pink (or deeppink) as it looks nice on me. The designer said not many people can take striking colours but it seemed to suit me... dunno true or not... Actually should have tried long ago instead of just looking at cloth samples, then would not have wasted so much time (coz of the colours she proposed I dun like).
So finally settled the colour I wanted and she will need to have it tailored asap as I only have about 2 mths left to my ROM date. Also made the payment for the dress as its confirmed. I have one less thing to worry about now.
Left to take train home and surprisingly the train wasn't that crowded at that time. I was damn hungry by then and luckily dinner was ready by the time I reached home.

New flat surveying again
Dunno why I get so agitated with him but just cun helped it. Maybe its that time of the month and hormones changes affected my mood ALOT. Anyway, I am just to lazy to have an arguement (which will also strain the relationship) so that's why I have to suffer in silence most of the time.
We shopped at Giant 1st while b4 heading to Courts. The sofa sets we were eyeing were on a sale, about $400++ less than what we last saw. Was tempted to buy but since the promo is until 10 May 07, will check out other furniture stores 1st in case or cheaper or better ones.
Had our usual hotdogs buns and chicken wings at Ikea b4 starting our shopping. Helped sis to buy 2 sets of hanging pockets and carried the big packet walking everywhere. We then took a shutter bus from Courts to Punggol mrt stn. Not many people took this direction and there were just 3 of us on the bus. The rest usually goes back to Tampines or Bedok mrt stn.
We arrived at the Punggol mrt stn and realised its damn ulu and quiet there. Seemed almost like a deserted area and we were glad we din choose a flat from there. Took a bus there to Sengkang where our new flat will be at. Surveyed the area again and had a closer look at where our flat is at. After that we checked out the surrounding and finally found the coffee shop, as well as a clinic and econ minimart there. Its quite convenient as the LRT stn is just behside too. Bus service no. 163 also stops there, which can be taken from Toa Payoh or from Braddell Road (just 5 mins from my house now).
Had dinner at the coffee shop b4 walking back to our new flat area and surveyed from the ground floor. We were glad we chose the right place as it was damn windy there and everything is just quite perfect there. We then walked further down to find the temples and sat outside awhile seeing them chanting b4 walking back to Compass Point at Sengkang mrt stn.
It had been almost 1.5 months since we were there and its tired as the previous time when we surveyed the area and flat to decide which one to take. We drank quite alot of water and as good as exercising like yesterday (even though din really cycle much due to the rain). Finally reached home taking bus service no. 159. Waited 15mins+ for the stupid feeder bus coz it always came earlier than 159 reached so had to wait for the next one. By the time I boarded, the next 159 came, as usual later than the feeder bus.

Met more IDs
Started going to 2 Interior Designer firms in IMM after getting some drinks (really hot day!). The 1st one we went to, the guy was sort of too lor soh and emphasized too much on himself (like how he quote, do his work and planning etc.). He did not even ask us what we wanted or have in mind and starting rattling non-stop and even wanted us to commit. We said we will discuss and consider b4 giving him a call.
We then went to the 2nd one and was served by a lady. She was quite nice and her approach was different as she had to find out what kind of work we need on the house, our budget and preference etc. b4 she can quote for us. As she will need some time to work out, we made an appointment to go down again next Friday to discuss more.

Met 1st ID
As it's Good Friday tomorrow, it felt like Friday today. Met Web near his workplace (Boat Quay area) and took dinner at the Kopitiam at the Central. Had a little misunderstanding as I walked to near his building and waited for him but he came from the other direction so both of us waited for quite a while. When I tried to call him, my phone gone bonkers again so when I finally got thru, he was abit pissed off. Anyway next time I will just stay put at wherever we are supposed to meet tp avoid any misunderstandings. Cun help it coz he's such an impatient person. Guys are like that... once you change place or what, they get irritated... just dun understand.
Din know there's actually a food court there else would have brought sis to eat there the other day. We had thought nothing much to eat there and took a bus away from there, not realising there was another wing inside (prob coz of all the blocking).
We then took a bus to River Valley as we need to go to my fren's company (interior design - ID firm) to take a look at the quotation and sketch he prepared for our new home. We took quite a while to find that ulu place as it was on the second floor of those old short buildings. The staircase din even have lights on when we left! My fren sort of ran through what he proposed for us. We will probably get him to change some things and go through some other quotes and design b4 making a decision who to engage. Now waiting for 2 more quotes from my frens 1st.
It was then off to Orchard while we spent the rest of the evening at the Shaw Centre Mac.

Cheap dun mean good..
Actually this photographer charges quite cheap when I contacted him earlier in the week. He 's charging only $600 inclusive of 300 4R prints, unlimited shots returned in DVD and even wanted to throw in a pre-wedding shoot for me. However, I had requested to view his online portfolio but he said he only has hard copies, which was why we arranged to meet today. Along the way, he sms me and showed me his fren's website, and said if I like this style, I will like his. Subsequently, he sms me again saying he loaded some pictures temporary and asked me to take a look. Although I find his photos ok, but would prefer to see more of his work, since he acclaimed that he had took 5 couples so far. When I asked him how many years of experience he has, he only replied saying he did portrait photography b4 and just started out taking wedding pictures this year. Already felt abit not so comfortable coz scared that he may not have enough exposure to date and started to question his reliability.
When he replied me saying his hard copies are delayed by the printers, I sort of got quite fed up and find this person not so trustworthy. Although I mentioned we will arrange to meet after he got more online portfolio or when his hard copies are ready, but I dun think will want him as my photographer. Now I am starting to wonder if those pictures he showed me were actually his or not.
Worse was he kept sms he after giving me his websites and asked if I like them or not. I told him we will meet and discuss and he still ask when. I told him we already arranged on Sun then he said he forgot. How can I trust such person, I am like taking a risk whether he will remember to come on my AD if I confirmed with him. I just feel that he is damn desperate for business and makes me wonder more about how he can charge so cheap.
Guess I will still stick to the earlier guy who quoted $530 with unlimited shots in DVD. Peggy will be meeting him too as she mentioned she liked his style, which I find it better than some of those professionals too. Maybe is the style that we found it comfortable. He's also a friendly guy except a bit shy at our last meet-up. Since brother is not in town, will be going with Peggy to meet him just nearby our blocks, proposed at the KFC opposite coz he's actually just stayinf around there too!

Our flat is ready!!

Supposed to meet one reno fren of mine as he has completed the proposed design and quote for our house but had to postpone the appointment coz Web was delayed by his training, somemore at Telepark (Tampines). Thus, I took a train down from Bugis and waited for him about 20 mins b4 we proceeded for dinner. Walked around abit and headed back to Raffles City. Hanged around until 11pm (when all the doors starting closing) as I came home and he's back to work. He will probably need to work till 4-5am, poor thing...

2nd visit to BS
There were only one couple and their fren there, and we were served by the assistant, Fannie. Vivian came by after a while when the store manager went to attend to the group. We heard that bride-to-be saying budget ard $6k, we almost dropped our jaws. Later when we heard the manager saying whole package will be $7668, we almost fell off from our sofa!! Some people really rich and generous leh. We suspect they could have strike toto or what...

ROM dress
After much persuasion, she called me back and agreed to make it special for me once more, at $450 (after discussion with the store manager). I still find it too ex thus continued to ask for a better price, she agreed to discuss with her manager again and call me back. It was a longer wait and when she called, she said their best is offer me at $400 which really is a good price. I told her I will contact her again coz I might want to change the design instead of the one she drew for me last Sat. Would of coz want a better looking and one I truly like since I will be keeping it.
Told Web about it and he asked me to go ahead, to save all my headaches. He mentioned that they have been so accommodating to me so I might as well take it. He even offered to pay for it but I said its not about money. The initial quote of $500 could be seen as reasonable or expensive, depending on the design and materials of the dress. I would want my $500 to be worth it and try to avoid people slaughtering me for that. After doing much research, realised that MTM dresses are more or less above $300 so I felt better after negotiating for it again.
Met sis after work, initially to shop at more places but since I will go ahead with my BS, we headed straight to dinner then some shopping. While at Metro, we saw the "Monsoon" range of dresses, costing about $443 a piece and the materials are crap (lousy cloth)! I felt more assured that $400 for a MTM dress is indeed quite worth it, somemore I get something which will suit me and to my liking. Even the dresses at Tangs and Robinsons cost at least $250+ each, somemore they are just over-the-rack kind. I want something unique and not found anywhere else (to save from seeing whole street of people wearing same thing).
I have more or less one headache now, and hope I am on the right track. I do appreciate the BS for doing so much for me (adhering to all my requests, terms and requests), on top of adding so much extra stuff to their usual package. Well, maybe I am too innocent (too gullible with sales people, sales tactics etc.) but I believed I am paying for a good package and good service.

Wedding matters
Managed to get some advice and intro over the forum thus contacted some freelance amateur photographers whose works are quite good but charges are high too. Right now, pure photography services without prints will cost around $400 to $680, with all pictures in a DVD or CDs. Am also asking for Peggy coz they also dun have photography included in her package thus hope can get a better bargain too.
I also asked from an old fren who does photography in a studio and he told me will usually cost $1k plus for professional and counted as 2 days for my case. I also asked my colleague cum irc fren for her quote coz I know she does freelance or sort of trying to do so, and thought she would charge me minimal as we know each other but she quoted me $750! Its so much more than a professional and she even told me before she quoted that she is not a professional. I almost fainted and told her straight its damn ex... Then she said the best she can go is $700 and told me usually people charge $750 a day. Ya I also know, but they are professionals leh... how to compare and quote like that... my toes were even laughing at that time. Din want to pursue further coz engaging her now is TOTALLY out of the question. Am quite disappointed with her, considering we have been frens for so long now...
As for the chauffeured car, I managed to find a company which charges quite low at $450 for 12 hrs for a normal merc car. They are also flexible in the sense that they can drive over to the bridal shop for tying of ribbons the previous nite or get the ribbons/ flowers from our bridal shop and they tie them. Should be finalising with them soon to secure the booking (need to pay deposit).
I am still searching for cheap tailor to custom-made my ROM dress. Last resort I will go to Peggy's BS (Bridal Studio) as they charge only $300 to $400 and I will be able to keep. The designer also mentioned she can work within my budget, which I might try to explore with my current BS too as they quoted me $500 is really much too ex. On the other hand, was thinking should just get a normal dress coz my ROM will be a small affair only with less than 20 people.
I had just intended to rent for free (only pay laundry charges) from my BS but Web mentioned I should buy/ make and keep coz its an important chapter for me. This also started all the headaches I am having now. I have been having sleepless nights becoz of my ROM dress so hope can settle soon. It should be more crucial than anything else now.

Settled lots of stuff
I managed to negotiate for my package with reference from some research and oveall quite pleased. It might be abit more ex with less thrills but for a designer BS, I think its quite worth it. Its rather difficult to compare every package from each BS coz everything is different, from designers, designs, materials, service, photography, effects and overall experience. Researching does help as I finally found something I truly wanted.
I will be having my wedding gown and evening gown made-to-measure (MTM) there. The designer, Vivian had already proposed and will start making my wedding gown. Evening gown will be later as its easier to make. I was thinking of getting my ROM dress there, but its too ex (costs ard $500 to MTM and keep). They had initially agreed on renting a ROM dress to me FOC but Web said that I should keep it. They had initially quoted me $300 MTM ROM dress but I thought I could keep it. After calling back to verify, realised cannot and need to top up and the cost is way above my budget so have to give it a miss. Guess I would need to find some shops to tailor-made one.
Sunday
Finally managed to do the registration for our ROM on 2 June 07. It will be a small affair on Saturday with only a few frens of ours with our own family and just 3 days b4 my bro's customary day!
Saturday
Managed to contact the 1st solemniser on our list (near Novena Square) and he agreed to do the solemnisation for us. Will need to fax to him an official invitation form on Monday.
Watched the movie "300" at GWC. The movie was ok, except its fighting all the way. The effects were good too. Rushed down to the BS after the movie as we grabbed some buns 1st. Took a bus from GWC to somewhere in Shenton Way b4 walking down. Alighted at the wrong bus stop (one stop earlier) so had to walk a bit further.
After spending 2 hrs+ at the BS with viewing of photo albums, discussion of the package, signing up, measurements and one fitting, we left for dinner at Raffles City's MOS Burger.
Friday
Web skipped his D&D so we did out hunting for a venue for our ROM solemnisation lunch. After dinner at a coffee shop at Boat Quay, we ventured around the area looking for suitable venues. We had initially planned at Novena Square's Lao Beijing but thought could find something else 1st. Had wanted Peony Jade but its booked on the day we wanted, no choice. Eventually after much searching, we went down to Novena Square and confirmed the venue with a deposit. Overall its quite nice and menu quite reasonable so we took it. Finally settled another headache.

Browsed through a bridal magazine at AMK library thereafter (we took bus 166 all the way back to AMK). Saw some designs I quite like so took some pictures with my handphone!

More restaurant hunting
In the end, we decided to meet at 12.45pm at Dhoby Ghaut mrt stn and I brought my heavy laptop out. It was so heavy and me being half stoned, swayed while I walked with the heavy backpack. We had decided to bring it out in case we need to find some info from the net. Web will carry it anyway so bring lor... (btw my shouders abit aching already even though I only carried it to and back home).
Web had left earlier even though the job was not completed coz he said dunno delay till when and since his colleagues were still there. Went straight to the foodcourt 1st as he was damn hungry and I watched him eat (still feeling quite full). We then walked around abit b4 dropping by Mac to start using their wireless to surf. The stupid network obviously wasn't quite easy to get connected as will need to register b4 use. The network name was also not obvious and I had to trial an error. The initial network I used was the Singtel Wireless@SG but the signal was damn terok. Eventually managed to sign on using the Singtel network as signing into Mac network got lots of problems. Surfed for a while and made some calls and decided to go down Chinatown again to check out Spring Court Restaurant.
We did not look at the 3rd floor and when I called, the manager was not able to describe the place to me. End up the 3rd floor, which can accommodate up to max 18 tables (but will be very cramped), is split into 2 sides, worse than the 1st floor which only has pillars blocking - totally out of the question. After taking a second look at the 1st floor, I still dun like the place and Web said have to take if really no choice as its a good location.
We then walked over to Furama hotel to check on their restaurant but their manager was off today so we were told to call back Mon-Fri. Weird that restaurants managers can actually work 5 days week, especially when in service line. Anyway we dun quite like the hotel as its rather old and had a weird smell on the restaurant/ function rooms floor. Walked over to Riverside Mall to check out the Jumbo Seafood Restaurant but seems like its more of an outdoor setting so skipped. We passed by another rstaurant (Peony Jade) as we reached Clarke Quay. I like the restaurant setting (a darker concept but looked romantic) but all the dates from September are fully booked! No choice la, since no dates and Web dun really like it, he found it too dark compared to 88 Restaurant (Harbourfront Tower 2).
Finally last stop to Tunk Lok Restaurant (which is very last choice coz quite ex and not too accessible - ulu building) but found out that Liang Court will be starting renovation for the whole building from April 07 for at least 1.5 years. Feeling so tired and warm by then so stopped by at Mac again. Bought a drink as we realised there was a power outlet at our table and thus happily started up the laptop again, struggled for 10 mins to get connected to Mac's network and finally it worked! Had to register again as another name as the earlier one dunno go where... The network was unfortunately damn slow, really crawling and the whole laptop became slow too, dunno why.
Finally gave up after surfing some sites and played games instead. Discussed about the restaurants and finally decided to take 88 Restaurant afterall since we both like the place but will be either a Fri or Sun after our customary day for the dinner (meaning 2 different days). Called up the restaurant and made tentative reservations 1st on 2 dates while Web will need to go back and discuss with his parents then we will go down and pay deposit asap to secure the place. Sat until almost hungry then took a bus back to Orchard to have Subway sandwiches for dinner. Walked over to DFS to rest and nua on the comfi sofa till 15 mins b4 their closing time then left for home.

Restaurant hunting
Initially decided to postpone the meeting to next Tuesday but one colleague said she might take leave, coz its school holidays so I tried asking my boss if 10am was ok. Another colleague will be on leave in the afternoon so cun too. She replied yes so as I proceeded to arrange and inform everyone, trying to kapok a room from a colleague as all other rooms were fully occupied. Then my boss called me and told me she cun make it coz need to rush out something... *many lines*. So I had no choice but to put in on Monday afternoon, very unwillingly as Mondays are always blue! Where got mood to have meeting, somemore with her!!
Was thinking whether to go lunch shopping or not until some colleagues dragged me along to the IT Show. Din want to go coz nothing much to buy and it will be damn crowded, which I hate. Anyway went with them coz cun make up my mind too and true enough, it was damn packed. The weather was also especially hot but lucky I had my umbrella with me! Really cun do without an umbrella nowdays, call me auntie I dun care... I rather stay away from the harmful rays of the sun and spoil my beautiful face hahaha...
Met Web at Chinatown after work to start our wedding banquet venue hunting. Started off with Spring Court at Upper Cross Street (shophouses opp Hong Lim/ Chinatown Point) but found the hall (1st floor) too cramped and too many pillars. Most of the people probably wun be able to view the low and small stage. We then had our dinner at the nearby chicken rice coffeeshop then took a bus down to check out the next restaurant (Habour City) on our list at PSA building. The restaurant looked ok but abit out of the place and too far. It was also located inside an office building thus quite quiet after office hours.
Left the place wanting to take a bus down to Harbourfront but took the wrong one as it headed to Jurong side (wrong direction and not going to Harbourfront). We had no choice but to alight few bus stops down and crossed the road to take another bus to Harbourfront. Luckily got some rebates else really waste money. Finally reached Harbourfront Centre and checked out the 88 Restaurant 1st at Harbourfront Tower 2. We liked the place as we enter as it was spacious and bright, with a few crystal chandaliers at the tall ceiling. Unfortunately, the date we wanted had been booked thus we need to either look at other dates or find other restaurants.
Walked over to Harbourfront Centre to check out the next restaurant (Dragon Gate) on the 4th floor. It was quite difficult to find if you go by the wrong lift. Its actually at the side where the cruise centre is thus we had to walk through the carpark as we used the lift from Harbourfront Centre. This restaurant was where my friend last held her wedding banquet about 6 years ago. Its been a long time and I really had vivid impressions of the place. The big hall was too big for us and the smaller one was too small. The other medium size one had been booked. Anyway we dun quite like the place as its too inaccessible.
Finally able to take a break after all the running around and had a drink at Mac b4 leaving for home. Will need to check out more restaurants tomorrow...

Busy weekend
Had dinner at the Marina Square food court again and quite crowded the Career Fair was on at Suntec. The "Qi Ji" store even had an early rest for the night as all their stuff were sold out. Walked abit then settled at Mac to discuss about our house and wedding matters till 10pm+ then went home.
Woke up early on Saturday morning (not so early but just 1 hr or more earlier than usual). Met Web at 1pm+ at YCK mrt train platform and we took a train down to Jurong East. Checked out stuff at IMM and rounded up with more discussions b4 we walked back to Jurong East Central for dinner.
Another tiring day today as we made our way to Tampines to catch a shutter bus to Ikea/ Courts. Not surprised that there were so many people and we alighted Courts 1st and checked out some electrical applicances' and furnitures' prices. They also have similar concept type layouts for bedrooms like Ikea. We particularly like 2 sofa sets and will KIV until we can spot a cheaper set. One L-shaped sofa was damn comfi and cost $1400++ while the other 3+1+1 set cost ard $1200++. We then went over to Ikea and started off with the ever famous Ikea cafe chicken wings and hotdog buns b4 starting off with big Ikea walk.
After alot of walking and deciding what to buy in future, we called it a day as we were both tired and thirsty. Good thing I had my water bottle with me so we saved in buying drinks (and trying to cut down on sweet drinks) even though we claimed 2 drinks from the Ikea friends card. Waited for the shutter bus awhile and we got some place to stand near the entrance of the bus and slowly shaked back to the Tampines mrt station.
Took bus 72 back to near YCK mrt station and cut through flats to AMK central. Went to NTUC Xtra after buying chrysanthemum tea from one of the chinese medical hall to check out prices there. Looks like we will probably buy stuff there as they are generally cheaper than elsewhere like Courts or Best Denki, plus can get NTUC points too. Bought a pancake each with a cup of bandung soya bean while we took a rest at the fountain area and left at 10pm+ for home.
